When Silence Is Loud: The Role of Internal Comms in Times of Change

Updated: Aug 1

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on how internal communications shows up during times of organizational change.

One of the greatest challenges in internal comms is striking the balance between honesty and sensitivity. It’s a tightrope walk, especially when decisions are still unfolding or emotions are running high.

But here’s the truth: You don’t protect your audience by softening the message.

People can and will read between the lines. And when clarity is missing, people will fill in the gaps themselves often with fear, speculation, or worst-case scenarios.

Ambiguity creates confusion. And confusion sparks panic.

In moments of silence, the loudest noise comes from what’s unsaid. That’s when rumors take root and misinformation spreads fast. This is exactly where internal communications should lead—not lag.

Because internal comms isn’t just about what we say. It’s about how we guide people through uncertainty.

At its best, internal communication is a grounding force. It acknowledges reality while offering reassurance. It creates space for empathy and trust especially when the news is hard.

You might not have all the answers. That’s okay. But you can always lead with care, clarity, and a deep respect for the people impacted most.

When done right, crisis communication doesn’t just deliver information, it holds the organization together.

Because in a storm, your message will either steer the ship or stir the waters.

Choose wisely.
